Tell Stanford why you think divestment is important.
It's clear that the administration values the opinions of alumni. While students and faculty on campus continue to urge the administration to divest the endowment from fossil fuels, we need the diverse perspectives of alumni to share unique takes on why divestment is important. Given your career, locale, experience, or interests, share why you think divestment from fossil fuels is important.
Here's How:
It's clear that the administration values the opinions of alumni. While students and faculty on campus continue to urge the administration to divest the endowment from fossil fuels, we need the diverse perspectives of alumni to share unique takes on why divestment is important. Given your career, locale, experience, or interests, share why you think divestment from fossil fuels is important.
Here's How:
- Send us a picture of yourself with a short quote of why you support divestment from fossil fuels. If possible, make the quote endorse divestment from your unique perspective. Why do you support divestment given your career, locale, or other factor? The picture of you should ideally show you in the role from which you're explaining your support of divestment. (Ex: Quote: As a teacher, I don't believe that places of education should be betting on the success of an industry threatening the future well-being of our students. Picture: You in the classroom). Your photo and quote will be shared on our Facebook page, with Stanford administrators and on our website. Email quotes and pictures to [email protected]. At the right is an example. Don't worry, just send us your quote and a photo and we'll do the formatting!
- Write a short Op-ed / Letter. In 300-700 words, explain why you think divestment from fossil fuels is important. Consider your unique perspective - what impacts of climate change do you see? What efforts do you see that could be bolstered by divestment? Relate some piece of your life/knowledge/work/etc. to the importance of fossil fuel divestment. Your piece will be shared on our Facebook page, with Stanford administrators, on our website, and maybe even published in the Stanford Daily. Find more information and submit your op-eds on this form.
- Ideally, send us both a photo of you in your role and submit the op-ed. This is the strongest way for us to get your message across. But if you only have time for one, do whichever is easier for you
Get More Involved
The Fossil Free Stanford on-campus campaign is composed of about forty students who are coordinating events, meeting with administrators, collaborating with the national movement, creating materials, researching divestment, convincing faculty members, and managing the movement to keep it focused and powerful. We need alumni/parent leadership to move this section of the campaign forward, because we do not have the capacity to lead it ourselves. That's why we have a fantastic team of alumni and parents working with us to manage this branch of the campaign. If you're interested in joining them please send us an email at [email protected] with your name and number, and we'll get you involved in the dialogue and planning process!

Follow this link to add your name to our roster of supportive voices! Signing our petition is the fastest and easiest way to support Fossil Free Stanford’s divestment mission. So far we have acquired over 3000 signatures to present before the Board of Trustees (some of them are on paper and have not yet been entered into the digital petition).
Come to campus and support the student act of civil disobedience. Over 170 students have pledged to participate! Although we are not asking alumni to directly join our act of disobedience, we want to see alumni out in force on Thursday, November 19th for our rally and march. Pledge here that you will meet us on campus!
